Dolphins and Manatees in Miami: Where to See Them by Boat

Most visitors come to Miami expecting the skyline, the beaches, and the nightlife. Almost nobody expects to spend their afternoon a few feet away from a wild dolphin or a manatee grazing in the shallows — but out on the bay, it happens more often than people think.

Miami's Everyday Wildlife

Biscayne Bay is a working estuary, not a theme park — which is exactly why it's full of life. Bottlenose dolphins live in the bay year-round, and West Indian manatees move through its channels and grass flats constantly, especially in the calmer months. You don't need a special tour or a permit to see either one. You just need to be on the water, moving slowly, at the right time and place.

Where You're Most Likely to See Dolphins

Dolphins tend to follow the deeper channels and cuts where fish congregate, so private captains keep an eye out in a few reliable spots:

• Government Cut and the channels near the Port of Miami
• The open water between Star Island and Fisher Island
• Along the edges of the sandbars, where they sometimes feed early in the day

Dolphins are curious and fast — they'll often surface near a slow-moving boat on their own terms, ride a bit of wake, and move on. Sightings aren't guaranteed on any single trip, but they're a regular occurrence on Biscayne Bay.

Where Manatees Hang Out

Manatees prefer calm, shallow, grassy water, and warmer months bring them into canals, marinas, and the flats around the bay to graze. They move slowly and are easy to miss — often the first sign is a snout breaking the surface for air, or a faint trail in the seagrass below. Idle speed near marinas and canal mouths is where captains spot them most.

How to Watch Responsibly

Both dolphins and manatees are protected under federal and Florida law. That means:

• No touching, feeding, or chasing — observe from a respectful distance
• Slow down and idle when animals are nearby
• Let them approach the boat, not the other way around

• Polarized sunglasses — they cut the glare and make it far easier to spot shapes below the surface
