We get this question on almost every call: "what's the best time to book?" Honestly, there's no wrong answer — but each time slot has a real advantage depending on what you're hoping to get out of the day.
Mornings on Biscayne Bay tend to have the flattest, calmest water of the day — before the wind picks up and before boat traffic stirs things up. That makes it the best window for wildlife spotting: dolphins can technically show up anytime, but your odds are best in the morning when the water is glassy enough to actually spot a fin or a splash from a distance. If Raccoon Island is on your list, this is also the window to book — we tend to see the raccoons most reliably between about 10 and 11am, so a morning charter timed right can line up with both.
This is classic Miami — full sun, warm water, and the most relaxed, straightforward version of the day: swimming, sandbars, music, no rush. If your priority is simply a great beach-day-on-the-water with your group, afternoon works well and it's the most flexible slot to book.
Sunset cruises are built for the view — golden hour over the skyline, cooler temperatures, and the most romantic version of a Miami boat day. It's the right call for anniversaries, date nights, proposals, or just ending your trip on the best possible visual. The tradeoff is you'll trade wildlife-spotting odds and swim time for the light show.
If wildlife (dolphins or raccoons) is the priority, book morning. If you just want a fun, easy day on the water, afternoon is the safest bet.
